Will Smith Is Making A Show Inspired By ‘The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air’ Because Screw It, Everything Is The ’90s Now

Fingers crossed it's just Jaden and Willow Smith saying broody philosophical things over canned laughter.

Now, this is a story all about how you’re about to have The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air intro music stuck in your head all day. Not just because news of the show is everywhere or because the song is always obnoxiously hiding in the back of your subconscious anyway, but because this is word for word how nearly everyone has reported on it:

Because you were about to Google it anyway:

According to a report from TV Line overnight, Smith’s production company Overbrook Entertainment is in the “very early stages” of developing a new family sitcom loosely based on The Fresh Prince. Not in any way an official reboot, the yet-to-be finalised comedy will put “a new spin on the fish-out-of-water tale while maintaining the spirit [of the original show]”.

While pretty much all the details are still in the works, we do know that Smith will be working with his long-time business partner James Lassiter, his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith, and her brother Caleeb Pinkett. And, with that on mind, I’m hoping for a sitcom about Jaden and Willow Smith living with a conservative suburban family who have no time for their perpetual political statements or Rust Cohle-level gibberish:

At last month’s Television Critics Association press tour, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt expressed interest picking up a project like this from Smith, but it’ll be awhile until we know anything solid. For the moment, you’ll just have to soothe your burning nostalgia with The X-Files, Twin Peaks, Full House, possibly Xenaand the fact that the ’90s are never, ever, ever going to die.

Help.
