While Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp have been down across the globe, memes have been flooding the only social media pages still up and running.

The three Facebook-owned apps went down early Monday morning and only came back into service at around 9am local time. But even though the social media pages were only out for about six hours — and luckily for Australians, most of this occurred as we slept — this gave the internet ample time to churn out memes about the great social media outage of 2021.

While Facebook confirmed that they were “aware” of the issue in a tweet, sharing that they were “working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible”, Twitter decided to make the most out of the situation.

Taking the opportunity to troll its biggest competitor, Twitter gleefully acknowledged that just about everyone had flocked to the platform while Facebook and Instagram were down.

Of course, a bunch of celebrities and almost every brand on Earth tried to hop in on the joke, too. But for the most part, people just united to poke fun at how fast the world descends into chaos when social media is down for only a few hours.

From laughs about finally being free from anti-vax aunts and uncles on Facebook to Squid Game-inspired jokes about Twitter finally eliminating its competition, the memes were aplenty.
