After the deaths of Freddie Gray, Mike Brown, Eric Garner and countless others that don’t get as much attention, the US is in the midst of a real crisis. After mass riots and protesting, there are still justifiably serious concerns about both racial profiling and police brutality, and the nation’s ongoing problems with race can still be felt in ongoing acts of violence. Now, overnight, Snoop Dogg has entered the debate.

After one of his shows in Sweden this weekend, Snoop Dogg was confronted by police and taken into the station for a urine test. “Police carrying out roadside controls noticed that Snoop Dogg [whose car was pulled over] seemed to be under the influence of narcotics,” a police spokesperson told The GuardianThough he was released 45 minutes later — pending the test results which are still to be determined — the rapper took serious issue with the arrest. He was also pulled up in 2007 for the same reason, and this time posted a series of videos on Instagram saying this would be his last time in the country.

“Sorry to all the fans in Sweden,” he said. “I’ll never be back in this country. You can thank your police chief and all the people that run your police department … This motherfucker right here is sweating me for nothing.”

Throughout the five videos he claims he was the victim of racial profiling, and has this morning followed them up with confronting security footage of unrelated assault in the US and testimonials from others who have experienced similar discrimination.

It’s a really worthwhile discussion and he’s of course within his rights to question the arrest. But also… considering he uses every other public appearance to talk about weed or boast about the inappropriate places he’s smoked it, it’s worth considering Snoop “Smoke Weed Every Day” Dogg’s situation might not be all that representative of the average black man.
