As ’90s pop cultural touchstones go, Amy Heckerling’s Clueless is right up there with properties like Twin Peaks, The X-Files, Power Rangers and Jumanji. So really, it’s hardly surprising that like all of those titles, the cult-classic teen movie is gearing up for a revival.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Sarah Kuhn and former Buffy star Amber Benson have revealed that they’re writing a comic book, with art by Siobhan Chiffon, that will pick up the lives of Cher, Dionne and Tai as they tackle “the drama of senior year and the looming question of what comes next.” The comic will be released in August through Boom! Studios, who have increasingly been publishing titles aimed at young women.

Asked why Cher was such an appealing character, Kuhn told the magazine that “I think a lot of times, there’s a burden placed on female characters, especially female protagonists, to be perfect. I know that Amber and I both like writing female protagonists who mess up a lot, because we mess up a lot.”

Kuhn also addressed the importance of telling stories featuring female protagonists. “I think what we’re seeing a lot now is a loud, angry pushback whenever you want to have something fronted by a character who isn’t a white, straight, cis male,” she said.

“What I kind of always hope that pushback is, is them realizing that white, straight, and male is no longer what a hero automatically looks like. I hope it’s the angry death rattle of people who don’t think we should have things like female Ghostbusters and female-fronted comics and Rey in Star Wars.
