Queens of the Stone Age threatened to pull the plug during a headlining festival set on the weekend because they were angered by a small VIP section at the front of the stage.

The band were halfway their performance at Spain’s Mad Cool Festival when frontman Josh Homme abruptly demanded that festival organisers let general admission ticket holders into the VIP section, which was a small fenced off area right in front of the stage.

“Security, you’d better let those people in,” he said. “I’m not playing until you let them in… you’d better let them in because you work for me tonight.”

“That’s right, come on in,” he added, before encouraging punters to jump the fence into the area. “It’s a Queens Of The Stone Age concert and you can do whatever you want to do… Let them in. Look at my face. Let them in or I will walk down there and let them all in.”

After a couple of tense minutes security obliged, and the band continued playing. Later in the set, Homme elaborated as to why he was so pissed off about the VIP section.

“The reason I told them to let people in there with you guys is I’m getting sick of everyone telling everyone what to do,” he explained. “I’m sick of everyone being offended. We travelled thousands of miles to play your party, to give you a night to remember.

“And we won’t leave until you’re fucked up, high, dancing, making out with somebody and having the best night of your life. Otherwise, you’re just a bunch of domesticated animals.”

It’s not the first time Homme has lashed out at punters and security during QOTSA sets. During last year’s headlining performance at Splendour in the Grass, Homme verbally slapped down a punter who gave the band the finger.

He’s also come under fire for far more serious incidents during the band’s gigs, including one last year when he kicked a female photographer in the face at a performance in Los Angeles. He issued a lengthy apology for the incident, claiming he was “lost in the performance”.
