It’s the song that keeps giving: Lil Nas X’s ‘Old Town Road’ is currently sitting at four official versions right now. Judging by how many artists keep putting up their hands to feature on yet another remix, you have to wonder if it’ll ever stop.

Last week’s remix featured Mason Ramsey and Young Thug giddy-up alongside Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus, and we reached what felt like peak ‘Old Town Road’. Especially given the meme-tastic music video, which saw the gang (and Keanu Reeves) break aliens out of Area 51.

Before that, ‘Old Town Road’ first found fame soundtracking a TikTok challenge. Then an issue with the US Billboard charts refusing to classify it as a ‘country’ song saw Lil Nas ask fans to get Billy Ray to record a remix with him. Then Diplo remixed that.

And now, ‘Old Town Road’ could break a US Billboard record for longest consecutive #1 song if it holds onto the top spot for two more weeks, to reach 17 weeks in a row. The fourth version of the song is one way to keep the fire going, but how about a fifth?

Lil Nas X joked about it last week when he Tweeted, “I act like im ok but deep down inside i wanna release another old town road remix”.

None other than bottle-cap challenge winner Mariah Carey replied, prompting Lil Nas X to write, “ok Mariah Carey lets get this remix in”.

Carey is one of the acts Lil Nas is currently battling for the longest consecutive #1 record with ‘One Sweet Day’, her 1994 song with Boyz II Men. Her tweet’s effectively an olive branch — a different tactic from other current record-holder Justin Bieber, who last week featured on Billie Eilish’s soulless ‘bad guy’ remix seemingly in an attempt to keep ‘Despacito’ at #1.

Who else is keen? Well, Smash Mouth also responded to Lil Nas’s open call, and just today, the rapper’s Tweeted asking if he could get Dolly Parton and fellow viral rapper Megan Thee Stallion on yet another remix. Megan hasn’t responded, by Parton broke out photoshop to respond, adding a pink horse onto Lil Nas’s single artwork.

And while you could call it Twitter conjecture, this is also, as we’ve seen, how Lil Nas works. He’s warned us, too.
