The My Chemical Romance reunion on Friday night US time has set the internet alight, as the band played their first shows in seven years. Every emo from the ’00s has dug out the black kohl eyeliner for the occasion, descending on Twitter to share every video and feel every feel.

If you ever wanted the whole world’s encouragement to very mournfully mouth the words to ‘Helena’ or ‘The Black Parade’, this was your weekend. People who weren’t in Los Angeles for the show logged into an unofficial live-stream, along with tens of thousands of other fans.

Ahead of the show, the band took to social media to share this moody backstage pic: “In 2017, we got in a room together to see what would happen. A couple more jam sessions and 39 days of rehearsals later, we’re ready to show you what we’ve learned. See you soon.”

They also turned up on Thursday night to give out blankets, which read “Devotion”, to fans camping outside the venue.

On the band’s still active community blog page, the responses to the show were as emotional as expected. While some people on social and on their website dubbed the whole thing an exercise in nostalgia, most people were just extremely grateful that Gerard Way and friends had returned.

It can all be summed up in one line from one poster: “ANYONE ELSE STILL CRYING? I feel like a fucking eleven year old again.”

The band opened with an intro medley before kicking into ‘I’m Not Okay (I Promise)’.

Sara Taylor from LA hardcore band Youth Code joined the band for ‘You Know What They Do to Guys Like Us in Prison’.

Look at the moment guitarist Frank Iero blows kisses to his kids in the crowd. Extremely wholesome content.

And after a first encore of ‘Vampire Money’ and ‘Helena’, the band came out for a second of ‘Welcome to the Black Parade’.

By most accounts the show was a “best night of my life” moment – even for people who were just following along at home.

My Chemical Romance play Download Festival in Sydney and Melbourne in March, before headline dates in New Zealand and Japan.
