Well, looks like it has finally happened: My Chemical Romance are back. And nobody is more surprised than the band’s fans.

After all, in the seven years since the band last played together, the chances of a proper reunion have seemed slim. Lead singer Gerard Way has been busy in his own way. He’s been enjoying a career in a very different field: the world of comics, where, thanks to his series The Umbrella Academy, he has become something of a shining star.

Worse still for longtime fans of My Chemical Romance, in interviews, Way always seemed cagey about the chances of the group reforming. According to him, making music with the band that shot him to superstardom “stopped feeling fun”. When he talked about the band and the possibility of maybe going on a tour together again, it was always with a strange mix of nostalgia and deep cynicism.

Well, looks like the nostalgic side has won out. The band are playing a single show together this December 20 in Los Angeles. And though that might not sound like very much yet, fans are pretty excited by the possibility that this might lead to more.

Which doesn’t seem impossible. A lot have bands have played a few one-off gigs that have slowly morphed into actual tours and, more than that, new music. Could we finally be blessed with new MCR in the year of our lord 2020? Doesn’t seem entirely impossible, thanks to this news.

Anyway, in the meantime, longterm fans of the band are celebrating by losing their entire shit.

Hell, even if this reunion story stops right here, simply the promise of more has injected a huge amount of joy into everyone’s lives. And what more could any My Chemical Romance fan ask for but that, particularly after almost a decade of total silence?
