Milan Ring’s Velvety SZA Mashup On Like A Version Will Make Your Day
Simply stunning.
We’ve really been blessed with a great run of Like A Versions recently — in the last few weeks we’ve heard Sly Withers breathe new life into Coldplay’s ‘The Scientist’, and Tyne-James Organ give us everything we ever wanted with a cover of The Kooks’ ‘Naive‘.
And the good run has continued this week, with Sydney’s Milan Ring delivering a velvety cover of SZA’s ‘Love Galore’, mashed up with ‘Broken Clocks’, from Ctrl.
“Queen of R&B, who better to cover?” She told triple j. “I couldn’t decide which song to do, so I jumped on my little Spanish guitar in my bedroom and started jamming ‘Love Galore’…I really love the simplicity of those chords, the major arpeggio, and I love the hook. And ‘Broken Clocks’…I just love the lyricism and the story. I just realised they work really well together.”
She worked all through the night to make the track, turning a vocal sample from ‘Broken Clocks’ into a loop to run under the new mashup; she also played every single instrument on the original demo. She also toyed with the idea of bringing in a string quartet — but COVID capacity restrictions quashed that dream, so her keyboardist took on the string duties.
Basically, it will just make your morning. Watch the cover below — and get around her performance of her latest single ‘BS’ while you’re at it.
