It seems very hard to remember now, but there once was a time when the mention of Coldplay didn’t generate eye rolls, mentions of ‘conscious uncoupling’, and stories of accidentally walking through their shoot for ‘Sky Full Of Stars’ on King Street in Newtown.

Parachutes and A Rush Of Blood To The Head were solid albums, critically acclaimed upon their release; we might have a visceral reaction to the ‘Clocks’ riff now, but back in 2002 we couldn’t get enough. And ‘The Scientist’, from A Rush Of Blood To The Head, remains a beautiful song — even if a little worn out by the amount of times Grey’s Anatomy managed to include it in a death scene.

Perth band Sly Withers took on the track for a lovely Like A Version this morning, leaving out the piano for a scratchy indie rock arrangement — in doing so, bringing a little bit of new life to an old friend.

“It’s a beautiful song,” Sam from the band told triple j in the accompanying interview. “It’s deceptively simple in its construction, it’s just a really great pop song. What it does with the little building blocks that are in there is just…so cool.”

They also blew through their new single ‘Clarkson’, taken from their upcoming album Gardens, which is out June 11.
