You ever get to the end of the week and wonder where the hell all your money went? Even though your car is full of empty coffee cups, your room is wallpapered with Deliveroo bags, and you’re rocking new $50 sunglasses (down from $150 tho).

We could all rein in our spending a bit, but it’s so easy to just Tap ‘n’ Go. If only there was a way to keep track of your money as easily as you spend it. Fortunately, there’s an app for that.

Your Current Bank App

Who else has a better insight to where your money goes? Your banking app tracks money going in and out of each account, and tells you where most of your money is going.

You might need to categorise a few transactions – direct transactions and Paypal can throw your banking app off a bit – but once everything’s categorised you know where your money’s going.

Download your bank’s app if you’re not using it already. If they don’t have an app, maybe it’s time to change banks.

Pocketbook

Pocketbook is Australian made and works with all the big banks. Log into your bank account through Pocketbook and it tracks everything you spend for you.

You get a better breakdown of your spending than your banking app, but Pocketbook doesn’t go as detailed as Monefy. Also, Pocketbook was bought by Zipmoney (the less cool Afterpay), so you’ll be able to see the dumb shit you spend your money on.

Monefy

Monefy’s biggest strength can also be its biggest weakness: You need to manually enter all your spending into the app. There are widgets and features to make it easier, but you still have to make it a habit.

However, keep Monefy up to date and you’ll have a great insight into your spending. Mostly because you have to enter everything you bloody buy. Manual entry could be the thing between you and that cheeky 11pm Iconic purchase.

Acorns

For something completely different, Acorns actually rewards you for spending money. It’s sort of like having a piggy bank in the digital age.

Sync a card to the app and Acorns rounds every transaction up to the nearest dollar to invest in an investment account for you. I mean, Acorns is practically asking you to impulse buy.

Acorns is free to download, but there’s a monthly fee to get started with their investing feature.

TrackMySPEND

With such a trendy name, you can tell TrackMySPEND was made by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.

The app may look dated and function similar to Monefy, but its one cool feature worth mentioning is the need/want selection in expenses. The need/want feature means you can make a distinction between similar purchases, like groceries that are bread and vegetables and groceries that are just wine and cheese.

Keep TrackMySPEND up to date and you’ll have a better breakdown of your indulgent purchases.

Saving money is a great skill to master now that pays off big time in the future. Try one of these apps, or develop your own system that works. Just as long as you have more money this week than last, or at least know where your money’s going.
