First-time filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos spent a decade of their lives exploring the complex murder cases brought against the once wrongfully accused Steven Avery and his 16-year-old nephew Brendan Dassey. They exhaustively researched. They devoted their lives to it. And eventually, in December last year, they released the result: the endlessly addictive ten-part Netflix docuseries Making A Murderer.

Now they have to spend another decade answering endless questions about it. After an extensive press tour in the US, Ricciardi and Demos are heading to Australia for an exclusive talk at Sydney’s Spectrum Now Festival. The pair will talk on stage for an hour with The Weekly‘s Charlie Pickering, and will then mercifully open the floor to a Q&A with the audience. This will be the first time they’ve answered questions like this at a festival.

“We always wanted Making A Murderer to start a dialogue around important issues in our criminal justice system,” Ricciardi and Demos said in a statement today. “We are thrilled that so many people all over the world are responding to the concept of fairness and equality, and we can’t wait to come to Australia to continue this discussion.”

While this is true — the show’s biggest triumph has been its critique of the American justice system and this has led to some incredibly important conversations about the potential fallibility of courts and police — it’s probably not the only questions they’ll receive.
