Less than a month after he joined forces with Sia and Labrinth on ‘Genius’, Diplo has premiered another huge collaborative project.

This time, he’s teamed up with fellow super-producer Mark Ronson for an electronic project called Silk City — with the aim of paying homage to some of the world’s greatest dance cities: Detroit, London, Paris, and Chicago.

According to Ronson, the pair met 16 years ago when a mutual friend introduced them at a diner in Philadelphia.

“In 2002, I was in Philly to DJ a party with Questlove for NBA All-Star weekend,” Ronson wrote on Facebook. “Before my gig, I met a friend at the diner Silk City. He brought a friend named Wes, a brash young kid who wanted to school me on who Jay Z had sampled for ‘PSA’. I knew the band and track. He one-upped me by knowing the label and year of release.

“16 years later, Wes is now Diplo but we’re still trying to out-nerd each other on obscure records and weird references. And we also found time to make a record that channels our shared love of soul, disco and house music.

“When we decided to spend a week in the studio to see what came of it, I had very little idea that this would be some of my favourite dancefloor music I’ve ever been a part of.”

Their first track — titled ‘Only Can Get Better’ — dropped today, featuring Australian artist Daniel Merriweather on vocals. Apparently there’s another track on the way as well — earlier this year Diplo told triple j that Silk City would have “two songs out really soon”.

They have a number of shows scheduled over the next few months, including performances at New York’s Governor’s Ball festival and UK’s Bestival. No word yet on whether they’ll be bringing Silk City Down Under.
