Macklemore has promised to donate the Australian proceeds from his 2013 song ‘Same Love’ to the Yes campaign, after finding himself at the centre of this country’s absurd debate around marriage equality.

The American rapper, in case you missed it, is scheduled to perform the song today at the NRL Grand Final. This has upset a lot of conservative politicians like Tony Abbott and Peter Dutton, who don’t think sport and politics should mix (except when it suits them, obviously).

There’s been a bunch of hand-wringing and tweeting about it over the last couple of days. Meanwhile, the track has hit the top spot on the Australian iTunes charts.

Speaking to Channel Nine on the eve of the game, Macklemore said he would find a way to use his share of the profits to make sure the Yes vote gets up.

“I want to donate my portion of the proceeds from ‘Same Love’, that I get off the record in Australia, to voting Yes,” he said. “I need to figure out what that looks like, and how to do that, but that is something I am going to do.”

The musician’s comments were met with a positive response from marriage equality advocates, with Australian Marriage Equality co-chair Alex Greenwhich tweeting his thanks.

The NRL Grand Final kicks off at 7:15pm tonight. Macklemore will perform at halftime.
