On the back of last month’s suitably depressing teaser, Netflix have released the first actual footage from A Series of Unfortunate Events, their eight-part adaptation of Daniel Handler’s children’s book series of the same name.

The new one minute trailer gives viewers a feel for the show’s grim aesthetic, which appears to be very much in keeping with Handler’s books. But the real talking point is Neil Patrick Harris, who is rocking some serious facial prosthetics as the villainous Count Olaf.

Olaf was previously portrayed by a scenery-chomping Jim Carrey in Brad Silberling’s 2004 film adaptation. It’s hard to get much of a feel of what Harris’ performance will be like from this trailer…although he’s certainly looks creepy enough.

Every episode of A Series of Unfortunate Events hits Netflix of Friday January 13.
