At this point, the bar is so low for Donald Trump that anytime he sits down with another world leader I’m just relieved if he doesn’t start a war. Thankfully, I didn’t have to stress about his recent meeting with the President of the US Virgin Islands, due to the fact that the President of the US Virgin Islands is… Donald Trump.

Now, if only someone would tell him that.

On Friday, Trump told reporters that he’d met with the president of islands to discuss hurricane relief. Presumably he was just talking to a mirror, or some other kind of shiny surface? Because again – and I really cannot stress this enough – he is president of the US Virgin Islands. They’re a US territory. It’s right there in the name.

In reality, Trump met with Kenneth Mapp, who is the governor of the islands. The White House later corrected the error in their transcript of Trump’s remarks by literally crossing out the word ‘president’ and replacing it with ‘governor’. A most elegant solution.

But by that time social media had already gotten hold of Trump’s gaffe, and they were not going to let it go quietly.

Still, in Trump’s defence, if Virgin Islanders could elect their own President, I reckon they’d definitely be considering it.
