Bill Murray Just Jumped Out Of A Cake And Sang Goodbye To David Letterman

Sadly, he was fully clothed.

After an incredible 33 years on the air, David Letterman’s second-last episode of The Late Show is scheduled to air in the US in a few hours. But, to build up this huge moment in television history, the show has just released a teaser clip with its final announced guest Bill Murray. It does not disappoint.

Not to be outdone by any of the other celebrities who offered their own tributes, stunts and heartfelt speeches, we now know that Bill Murray enters the interview by jumping stumbling out of a giant farewell cake in a jumpsuit and safety googles (for some reason?) then proceeds to cover the set, the band, the audience and Letterman himself in frosting.

The only way it could be better is if he was completely naked.

Though the interview is yet to be released online, there are also widespread reports it finished with Murray breaking into song. Members of the live audience have been posting on social media that Murray sang “More Worldwide Pants” — the name of Letterman’s production company — to the tune of John Lennon’s ‘Give Peace A Chance’.

Because Bill Murray is Bill Murray, he then walked around the streets of New York singing and leaving a trail of cake while linked arm in arm with random fans. In a move which they will no doubt regret until the day they die, the girls in his immediate presence chose to maniacally cackle instead of sing along with him:

As if anyone ever needs a reason to invite Bill Murray to do all this, his place on tonight’s show is all the more important given he was actually Letterman’s first guest back in 1982. Back then, the late night host was just an adorable little newbie who’d only ever had a morning show and Murray hadn’t yet done Ghostbusters or Groundhog Day or learned that he could ride into shows on horses or crash people’s parties or generally be the IDGAF hero he is today.

“I swear Letterman, if it’s the last thing I do I’m gonna make every second of your life from this moment on a living hell.”

Eerie. I’m 99 percent sure he’s whispering it to him again here:
