With eight movies released so far, the DC Extended Universe isn’t quite as established as the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

But there’s a whole bunch of movies in development — some of them already much more exciting than their predecessors — including two incredible-looking projects out this year.

Here’s why we’re looking forward to the future of the DCEU…

Wonder Woman 1984

Gal Gadot in the very 80s poster for Wonder Woman 1984

It’s a lady-heavy year for the DCEU, which gets no complaints from us.

Patty Jenkins returns to direct the follow-up to Wonder Woman. As the title suggests, Wonder Woman 1984 shifts the setting forward to the ‘80s and the Cold War. Gal Gadot reprises her role of Diana, while Kristen Wiig will play her antagonist, Cheetah.

Pedro Pascal is the other villain of the film, Maxwell Lord. Chris Pine also returns as Steve Trevor, although how that’s possible after the events of the first movie, we’ll have to wait to find out. Wonder Woman 1984 will drop in Australia June 4 2020.

The Batman

Same DCEU, all new Batman. Ben Affleck was originally meant to write, direct AND star in The Batman, but, er, that didn’t work out.

Now the movie will be directed by co-writer Matt Reeves, who shifted the plot to focus on a 30-year-old Batman in the early days of his crime-fighting career. Reeves has said the movie is more noir than previous iterations, with emphasis on Batman’s detective abilities.

Robert Pattinson is taking up the titular cape, while Westworld’s Jeffrey Wright replaces JK Simmons as Commissioner Gordon and Andy Serkis replaces Jeremy Irons as Alfred. Meanwhile Zoe Kravitz will be Catwoman, Paul Dano will play the Riddler and Colin Farrell rounds out the villains as the Penguin.

The movie is currently set for a June 2021 release.

The Suicide Squad

Not to be confused with Suicide Squad (the “the” makes a difference, see?), this movie is due out in August 2021.

James Gunn is directing, and Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis and Joel Kinnaman reprise their roles from the previous movie, with Jared Leto and Will Smith being noticeably absent. Joining the cast are John Cena, Storm Reid, and Peter Capaldi, plus MCU alumni Idris Elba, Sean Gunn and Taika Waititi.

Black Adam

DCEU

The Rock enters the DCEU! Black Adam is a supervillain and the enemy of Shazam.

The movie will focus on Black Adam’s origin story. At this stage it doesn’t seem like Shazam himself will be appearing in the movie, but the superhero team the Justice Society of America apparently will.

Watch out for Black Adam in December 2021.

Shazam! 2

Shazam is a new direction for the DC cinematic universe DCEU

Not much is known about the sequel to Shazam! except that it’s currently in development, Zachary Levi will return in the main role, and it’s set for release in April 2022. Hopefully we’ll learn more soon!

The Flash

DCEU

Ezra Miller portrayed The Flash in Justice League and is finally getting his own movie in July 2022.

It’s rumoured Gal Gadot will appear as Wonder Woman, but not much has been confirmed about the movie at this stage. After changing many hands, Andy Muschietti is attached to direct and Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson is working on the script.

Aquaman 2

Aquaman reviews DCEU

James Wan is returning to direct the sequel to Aquaman, and Jason Momoa is not only reprising his role as Aquaman, he’s also contributing to story development.

The movie will apparently explore the other Seven Kingdoms of Atlantis. Patrick Wilson is also returning as Ocean Master, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will reprise his role as Black Manta. The movie is set for a December 2022 release.

And then some!

There are a bunch of other DCEU movies in the early stages of development, including Batgirl, Cyborg, Green Lantern Corps, New Gods, Wonder Woman and Aquaman spin-offs, and sequels to Wonder Woman 1984, Justice League and Man of Steel. Stay tuned for updates.
