The Melbourne man who attempted to intervene in last week’s Bourke Street knife attack has been charged with burglary and theft. Milkshake duck strikes again.

Michael Rogers, aka Trolley Man, was hailed as a hero after he repeatedly rammed Bourke Street attacker Hassan Khalif Shire Ali with a shopping trolley as Shire Ali slashed at police officers.

After it emerged that Rogers was homeless, a GoFundMe page was set up to help him get back on his feet, attracting more than $140,000 in donations in a week.

But on Thursday, police revealed that they wanted to question the 46-year-old over recent burglaries in the Melbourne CBD and St Kilda areas. According to police, the alleged crimes all occurred before last Friday’s attack.

Rogers turned himself in at West Melbourne Police Station on Friday evening, and has since been charged with two counts of burglary, two counts of theft, and committing an indictable offence while on bail. He was remanded in custody and will face the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today.

Beloved restaurateur Sisto Malaspina was killed during the Bourke Street attack, while two other men were injured. Shire Ali was eventually shot by police and died in hospital.
