Ever since 2016, when one commenter wrote ‘shoulda been higher’ on every single Hottest 100 post by triple j, punters have been putting in the work to outwit each other. And this year’s winner of the true Hottest 100 competition — the funniest comments — might just be ABC Hobart?

As pointed out by triple j, whoever was in charge of the social media for the local ABC page was having a great Saturday, posting with a confidence level we can only describe as aunt: you know, the brazenness of commenting something almost completely unrelated on a tagged photo of you from five years ago posted by your ex’s then housemate?

Whoever was behind the keyboard had a clear system for their shitposting — some odd tangential pun based off a song’s name. For example, on Tame Impala’s ‘Is It True’ (#17), they wrote, “everything we post is true” with a smiley emoji; on Sofi Tukker’s ‘House Arrest’ (#71), they wrote, “Legit felt like I was under house arrest in 2020”; and wrote ‘Way down here in Tassie’ on Ocean Alley’s ‘Way Down’ (#72). Great stuff, truly.

Our favourite comment, though, was their repeated announcement that ‘Hoops’ had won the 2020 Hottest 100. Honestly, it’s what the year deserved. There was even some light sledging from ABC Perth, naturally:

Ironic?

There was a little bit of competition though for best ongoing gag: as Pedestrian.TV point out, one ardent Guy Sebastian stan flooded triple j’s posts with anger about the Aus Idol alumn failing to chart. Better luck next year.

As for who actually landed on the list, the top honour went to Glass Animals with ‘Heat Waves’, followed by Spacey Jane’s ‘Booster Seat’ and Flume’s ‘The Difference’ with Toro Y Moi. Find the full run-down here.
