Everybody knows that the only effective way to truly achieve change on this troubled earth is to release a Christmas single to help make the world a better place. And the good people at Tonightly With Tom Ballard have done just that.

The Tonightly Christmas single is a powerful exhortation to reach out and make a difference, to come together as a community, as a country, as a people. But the team at ABC Comedy’s new late night news program have also touched upon a big issue — in a world that seems absolutely plagued by woes, which one problem do they focus on? So they’ve decided to try and raise awareness for literally everything.

The video for ‘Literally Everything: The Tonightly Christmas Single’ is everything you want from the genre — soft tinged glowing lenses, a choir of bright hopeful faces beaming at the camera, microphones, backup singers, Santa hats and a bewildering range of terrible things that are occurring in the world.

Within the first minute of the  hilarious jingle, the song touches on: deforestation, poverty, ISIS, climate change, Palestine, the NBN, North Korea, racism and Cardinal Pell, and they do not stop there.

It’s also a bloody great song, which manages to accurately parody charity jingles while also being extremely catchy. Plus, Bridie Connell (who put the entire musical number together with Benny Davis) and Tom Ballard have a great and surprising set of pipes on them.

You Can Watch The Whole Thing Here

Tonightly has only been on the screen since the start of December, but it’s already kicking some comedic goals, with ‘Literally Everything’ definitely being one of their funniest sketches yet. Other highlights include the show’s excellent satire of Burke’s Backyard, called ‘How to Grow a Sexual Harasser’.

Speaking to Junkee, Ballard described the show as somewhere between The Daily Show and Colbert.

“I’m not saying that Tonightly is better than those shows, but also we don’t have ads, so…”

When asked about the frenetic environment of creating a daily satirical news show, he said that it’s intense, trying to constantly make sure that they’re across every aspect of the news. But he also said that’s what makes it exciting.

“I like how loose it is,” he said. “You kind of have to lean in to the chaos.”

While it might seem that this song is more than the garbage fire year that is 2017 deserves, Tom actually has a slightly more optimistic outlook.

“Thanks to the age we live in, we just have so much access to all the misery, we’re bombarded by stories every day — it feels overwhelming, like what’s the point of doing anything?”

But he also says that in the long run, there’s always been a lot of bad stuff happening, we just haven’t had 24/7 access to it all, which is why we might feel like we’re especially overwhelmed with bad events right now.

“We’re never gonna fix everything” he says, “But you can focus on one thing,” which I guess is kind of the point behind the whole sketch.

But while we love to have a joke and a chuckle about the trope of Christmas singles for charity, the Tonightly crew aren’t just poking fun at wealthy celebrities singing about community spirit.

They are actually raising money for charity via their parody Christmas song. All revenue from the single will be donated directly to Street Smart, which funds community projects to support people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, and work to end homelessness in Australia.

So you can help make the world such a completely horrifying place by purchasing ‘Literally Everything: The Tonightly Christmas Single’ here.

In the meantime, go watch the hilarious video and make sure to tune in to the show tonight.

Tonightly With Tom Ballard airs weeknights on ABC Comedy. In tonight’s episode, Tom pays a visit to the Australian Christian Lobby conference and the team take a look at George Christensen’s christmas video.
