Please stop what you’re doing, grab some headphones, and get ready to close out the week with a gentle ditty about the best bird, the Australian White Ibis.

It’s been a rough week for your local ibides. Just this Monday, they were robbed in Australia’s Bird of the Year competition, coming second to the unworthy magpie. That, and they continue to be defamed and vilified on the streets of Sydney, but that’s every week I guess.

Now, though, they can kick back in their dumpsters and rest easy knowing that Sydney acappella band Songtourage has done them justice in the beautiful, if weirdly-titled ditty ‘Song For My Daughter (Who Is An Ibis)’.

The band has come a long way since 2015, when we called them contenders for the Whitest Men In Australia after hearing their lawn bowls-themed cover of Wrecking Ball. They’re still pretty white, but they’re now expanding into original music, and it’s clear that they’re prioritising the birds that matter.

In SFMD(WIAI), Songtourage manages to fuse two much-hated genres — flaccid Australian indie-folk and pro-ibis anthem — to produce a thing of real beauty, replete with three-part harmonies about bin juice, ibis-related craft projects, and a rousing refrain of self-acceptance.

“Fuck yeah, I’m an ibis, my beak is weird and long. I’ve got pink bits in my armpits; can’t we all just get along?”, the song proclaims in its fourth minute, and man, if that isn’t profound, then what is? I urge you to leave work early this afternoon, find your local ibis, and share a moment of solidarity as you listen to this song. The music video’s also pretty good.
