This ‘Simpsons’ Routine On ‘Strictly Dancing’ Is Somehow More Cursed Than That Eisteddfod

The world didn't ask for this, but we deserve it.

A few months back, the internet unearthed footage of a chaotic The Simpsons-themed Rock Eisteddfod from 1997. Clearly, someone behind the scenes at UK reality competition Strictly Dancing took note.

Over the weekend, former frontman of The Wanted Max George donned a lot of yellow paint and prosthetics for a duet with dance partner Dianne Buswell, as part of the show’s movie week.

The duo danced to the show’s theme tune while in-character as Homer and Marge, on a set that used projections to re-create the family’s home and town. In one section, Homer plays Marge’s leg like a saxophone; in another, Marge pushes Homer off the couch, and he flips backward on his head in a move that surely requires a shocking amount of neck strength.  But no moment is quite as severe as when Home wrangles his wife onto the floor by pulling on an invisible rope.

There’s a lot going on, and it’s best that you just watch it. The duo got a standing ovation from the band — who, during these ‘uncertain times’, double as the studio audience — and admittedly, it’s not the easiest routine. Who knew Homer had those moves?

Well, the creators behind the 1997 ‘The Seven Deadly Simpsons’ Eisteddfod performance, as bought to life by Toowoomba’s Harristown State High School. By chance (fate?), regular Junkee contributor Bec Shaw was involved in the production and gives an oral history here.

Where the Eisteddfod’s charm is in its low-budget, high-horror production values, this slick BBC production turns up the terror thanks to the uncanny valley of it all. ‘Enjoy’ it below.
