If the best covers are first and foremost surprising, taking the familiar and then turning it on its head, then The Set‘s new rendition of ‘Never Ending’ by Rhianna is as good as covers come.

Yep, over the weekend, the ANTI deep cut got a new polish, courtesy of as unexpected a trio as it is possible to imagine — Paul Kelly, Ziggy Ramo and Eves Karydas.

Each of these performers is a titan in their own right: Kelly is as close as we come in this country to pop music royalty, while Ramo and Karydas are astonishing up-and-comers who have spent years polishing their craft and creating diverse, unusual bodies of work. The combination of these three talents? Pure magic.

Stripping down the pop hit to its most essential components, the trio trade vocal duties back and forth, each enhancing and illuminating the others’ skills. It’s pop music as mosaic, and it goddamn slaps.

The cover aired as part of Australia’s live music TV powerhouse The Set, which has been something on a roll as of late: it was only a few weeks ago that we got to see Genesis Owusu and The Chats take on a Talking Heads classic.
