There May Be A ‘Game Of Thrones’ Spinoff, Assuming Any Character Actually Survives

The showrunners fanned the flames at SXSW.

If you watch Game of Thrones, then you know that you can’t allow yourself to have a favourite character. Inevitably, that character will die a horrible death, probably after they finally experience a true moment of happiness or growth (don’t talk to me about the Red Wedding, it still hurts in my heart places).

As Game of Thrones is hacking its way to a finale (the creators confirmed that the show will end after eight seasons) calls for a spinoff series, presumably starring whoever is left or as some sort of flashback, have grown stronger. At SXSW this weekend, showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss appeared on a panel moderated by Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) and Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), and admitted that the rumour that HBO may create a Game of Thrones spinoff isn’t so unrealistic. But, you know, they don’t actually want to be involved with it.

“We all had dinner last night and we were saying that we should all go do different things. There’s always gonna be an urge,” Benioff said. “But for the characters that maybe will survive, there’ll be this temptation to keep doing it and do the spinoff show or the sequel show… I think HBO might well do one, and I’m looking forward to watching it. I think it’ll be great, but I think it’s better for them to get new blood in with new visions.”

Okay! Game of Thrones season seven premieres on July 16.
