Last night Lizzo played to a packed-out and adoring audience at the Sydney Opera House. But rather than keep the show all frivolity and fun, the singer eventually decided to take things down a notch and address the crisis unfolding across Australia.

“I feel so connected to you guys right now during these bushfires that are plaguing your nation and destroying wildlife and animals and homes,” the rapper said during a break between tracks. “And I just want to let you know, more than my heart going with you, am with you. I am with you every step of the way.”

From there, the musician went on to draw the connection between the Australian bushfires and the international climate crisis. After all, as everyone but Australia’s politicians seem to understand, a global trend towards warming will increase the severity and frequency of natural disasters like the bushfires all around the world.

“This is not just an Australian crisis, this is a global crisis, affecting the whole world,” Lizzo said. “The things that are happening here are happening all around the whole world. We can feel so disconnected at times. We can seem so far away from each other. But this is the one Earth.”

After noting that she was using her shows as an opportunity to crowdfund money to support those affected by the fires, Lizzo went on to stress the need to hold onto good times amongst the bad.

“I’m donating, we’re all donating. Because I know that this is nice, to come here. We’ve been looking forward to this show, anticipating this moment. And unfortunately this is such a tragic time, and I couldn’t not reflect the times. Because I’m an artist. And that’s what artists do. They speak up for the people.”
