Lil Nas X Covered Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’ And It Was Sultry As Hell
Two icons, together at last.
Fresh from the release of his debut album Montero, Lil Nas X has delivered a cover of Dolly Parton’s beloved ‘Jolene’.
The cover took place in the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge — it’s fairly muted, considering how Lil Nas X usually performs, but a solid cover all the same. He also gets points for the glittering mic and butterfly-adored mic stand. Watch it all happen below.
Is it as good as his friend Miley’s? You be the judge.
Montero officially dropped last Friday after months of wild promo — giving Satan a lapdance in the video for ‘Call Me By Your Name’, announcing his ‘pregnancy’, making out on stage, his pants ripping during an SNL performance — and so far it’s been received positively.
Pitchfork gifted it a 7.1 out of ten, writing that with Montero, Lil Nas X is carving out a better future for queer youth. “He’s using both his music and celebrity to carve out a unique space explicitly for queer people who feel as alone as he did growing up and emphatically insisting on a better future,” reviewer Eric Torres wrote.
The Guardian was a little more muted, awarding it three stars, calling it a mixed bag but filled with enough assurance that it stands up. YouTube’s The Needle Drop, AKA Anthony Fantano, gave it a 7/10 — not bad from the melon.
