Why You Should Just Suck It Up And Choose The 8am Class

It's good practice for having an adult job.

It’s that time of year again. You’re trying to figure out your weekly timetable for the upcoming semester, and how many weekly sessions you can logistically fit in around your classes and work schedule.

You see there’s an option for an 8am class and of course, you scroll right past it. No student in their right mind would voluntarily submit themselves to that torture, and if they can’t avoid it then they’ll sure as hell complain about it all semester.

I know you don’t want to hear it, but 8am classes aren’t nearly as bad as you think they are. There are heaps of benefits to being done with class nice and early in the day, so here’s why you should count your lucky stars you’ve got an 8am class this semester.

Your Class Sign Ons Won’t Be As Stressful

Online class sign ons can be as stressful as buying tickets to Beyoncé’s last Australian show. Save yourself all that unneeded sign on anxiety and put your hand up for that early morning tutorial.

While everyone rushes to snag a spot in the afternoon classes, you can breathe easy knowing you chose the less popular option. You’ll be thanking yourself for choosing an 8am class before the semester even begins.

Your Class Will Likely Be Smaller

The afternoon classes will be packed to the rafters, so your 8am class will be significantly smaller. This means more one on one time with your lecturers, which is a massive bonus.

Not only will you have more time to pick their brains about the course material but they’ll also start to remember who you are. You’ll feel more comfortable asking your lecturers for career advice, and you can even add them as a reference when you start applying for jobs.

You Can Enjoy More Daylight

Waking up past midday can be all well and good, but it becomes less appealing when you realise there’s only four hours of sunshine left in the day. It might be a bummer at first waking up for early classes, but just think of how much daylight you have left to enjoy!

Go for a nature walk, explore your city, ride one of those random public bikes, or just go lay down on a nice piece of grass. The possibilities are endless for soaking up that vitamin D goodness.

You Have More Time In The Day

Depending on what time your afternoon classes are, you don’t really get much time before or after them for yourself. Classes starting early means classes finishing early, and then the rest of your day is free to do whatever you want.

Go have coffee with that friend you haven’t seen in ages, get a head start on those assignments, or even take an extra shift at work. It’s pretty cool what you can get done in 24 hours, especially when time isn’t spent curled up in bed.

You Can Get Used To Being A Real Adult With A Real Job

Hate to break it to you, but the real world is nowhere near as cruisy as uni. Getting into that daily grind will feel like a breeze once you’re used to knocking out a few 8am classes.

Yes, you might be incredibly hungover, or you might have accidentally stayed up until 3am scrolling through Facebook memes. But you can’t avoid those dreaded early morning starts once you get a grown-up job, so better start getting used to it.
