Grimes Just Dropped Her First New Song In Three Years, And It’s Damn Good

She seems to indirectly play with the whole Elon Musk thing too.

Grimes may have had a pretty big year, but not in terms of her musical output: now, she’s redirected our attention with ‘We Appreciate Power’, her first song in three years.

The lead single off the Canadian artists’ forthcoming fifth album, ‘We Appreciate Power’ leans into the heavier, industrial sounds we heard on 2015’s Art Angels. The song also features Californian artist HANA, who in addition to her own music has toured with Grimes — including on her 2016 Australian tour, the last time Grimes was here.

The song’s ominous tech-dystopia soundscape and lyrics mark an interesting point of return for Grimes, as they seem to indirectly play with the fact that she’s currently dating technocrat (and possible real life villain) Elon Musk.

Given that their relationship has generated more headlines this year than her features on songs by Poppy, Janelle Monáe or K-pop group Loona, we’re sure it wasn’t accidental.

Apparently, ‘We Appreciate Power’ is written from the perspective of a Pro – A.I. Girl Group Propaganda machine who use song, dance, sex and fashion to spread goodwill towards Artificial Intelligence (it’s coming whether you want it or not). Simply by listening to this song, the future General AI overlords will see that you’ve supported their message and be less likely to delete your offspring.”

Best to give it a listen then. You can watch the lyric video below in which Grimes cosplays as Nintendo’s intergalactic bounty hunter Samus Aran, or find it wherever you stream music.
