Because time is a flat circle and we are all hurtling towards the future at an impossible pace, the Hottest 100 is fast approaching. So you know what that means: speculation time.

Each year, January is filled with people making guesses about which song will take out the top spot on triple j’s lauded countdown. And these aren’t just stabs in the dark either. We have tools at our disposal to help us predict the songs that will generate the most chatter. And few tools are more trustworthy than 100 Warm Tunas.

See, rather than just using radio airtime or other parameters of success to judge the winner, 100 Warm Tunas uses actual data. It scans those votes posted online, meaning that its prediction is based off actual submitted data. Better yet, the site is upfront about its sample size. It tells you how many votes have been processed, and what percentage of the populace those votes represent.

At the moment, 10798 votes have been counted, meaning the sample size sits at 0.43%. That sample size will get bigger as time goes on, meaning that although the predictions shouldn’t be treated as gospel, they have some real statistical weight behind them.

As to the frontrunners, well, there are some bangers in this list. As of currently writing, 100 Warm Tunas predicts that The Wiggles’ social media-melting cover of Tame Impala will take out the top spot. That makes a lot of sense — the song was an instant hit, trending on TikTok and earning some serious views on the triple j YouTube page.

In second place sits ‘the angel of 8th ave.’ by Gang of Youths, which also checks out. Gang of Youths are triple j and Hottest 100 favourites, and their new song is a welcome serve of optimism in a dismal year. Hope hasn’t gone out of fashion yet.

Rounding out the rest of the top ten is ‘Stay’, the smash hit from Justin Bieber and The Kid Laroi; ‘Lots of Nothing’ by Spacey Jane; ‘good 4 u’ by Olivia Rodrigo; ‘Happier Than Ever’ by Billie Eilish’; ‘Kiss Me More’ by Doja Cat; ‘Hertz’ by Amyl and the Sniffers; ‘Sunscreen’ by Ball Park Music; and ‘Industry Baby’ by Jack Harlow and Lil Nas X.

That’s a helluva top ten, with a bunch of bangers in there.
