From blowing up after their first gig to playing some of Australia's biggest festivals, Erthlings have had a massive year -- and a lot of awkward moments, too.

If you don’t know Erthlings, catch up.

The Sydney four-piece are one of our not-so hidden darlings: after a set of perfect singles last year and a lot of industry hype, they’ve come out with an EP that surpasses expectations, a set of sleek synth-pop that sounds like it’s always been in your life. And all before they’ve graduated high school.

Issy, Jessame, Taylor and Lissa have been making music together since they were eight, and it shows — all tracks on Indigo are deceptively effortless indie-pop, though never coldly cool. That’s doubly impressive, since if we were signed to Future Classic as teenagers, we would’ve immediately become insufferable.

But Erthlings are pretty grounded: when they came into Music Junkee to talk through some of their memories across the past two years for our Artist Alphabet series, they mostly chatted about getting star-struck backstage at music festivals.

First, there was the time they messed up on a chance to meet Billie Eilish while playing Groovin The Moo together; then there was freaking out over Kevin Parker and Ruel backstage at Splendour, which didn’t exactly go so well.

“We still don’t know whether [Ruel] thinks we’re just fans, or knows that we’re, uh, semi-relevant,” they joke.

They also look back on their first gig at Bigsound 2018, where they all lost their cool over an amp issue while attracting a massive crowd that couldn’t fit in the room, as well as getting cysts from playing guitar, and being cursed by the bass strap Gods.
