Not all heroes wear capes, but hopefully these legends wore ear plugs: this Friday, two elderly German men escaped their nursing home to go to a heavy metal festival.

We get it — Wacken Open Air is one of the world’s biggest heavy metal festivals, and we’re sure this year’s four-day line-up was particularly FOMO-inducing, with headliners including Danzig, Judas Priest, Hatebreed, In Flames and Running Wild.

Which is assumedly why the duo escaped in the confines of darkness, unable to simply sit there. Unfortunately, the home soon realised they were missing and alerted the police.

The metal-loving men were eventually found by police at the festival at 3am. Talking to German broadcaster Norddeutscher Rundfunk (via DW), police spokesperson Merle Neufeld said they were “disorientated and dazed” but didn’t want to leave, so police escorted them home.

“They obviously liked the metal festival,” Neufeld said. “The care home quickly organised a return transport after police picked them up.”

Hollywood, this is ripe for a beautiful film about ageing, love, loss and heavy metal. Make it happen — for the leads, we’re thinking Christopher Plummer and Sir Ian McKellen.
