A new trailer for the Downton Abbey movie has just dropped, giving us our first look at what the Crawley household has been up to in the years since we last saw them.

It’s been four years since the popular British period drama ended its sixth season, but only two in Downton Abbey time. Set in 1927, the film will feature the arrival of King George V and Queen Mary to the Crawley’s Yorkshire estate. Meanwhile, Lady Mary Talbot (Michelle Dockery) appears to be considering leaving Downton, while butler Thomas (Rob James-Collier) may finally get a boyfriend.

Times are getting tougher as the Great Depression approaches, and there are fewer servants wandering the abbey’s halls than there were at the start of the series. Even so, Downton Abbey‘s trailer indicates the opulent upper-class eye candy everyone so loved from the series has returned as refined as ever.

The series finale of Downton Abbey took place in December 1925, and left pretty much everyone hopeful and happy.

Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) married Bertie (Harry Hadden-Paton), becoming the Marchioness of Hexham and allaying her series-long fear of becoming a spinster. Lady Mary told her husband Henry (Matthew Goode) she was pregnant but otherwise kept it under wraps so she didn’t steal Edith’s thunder, demonstrating Mary’s substantial character growth.

Dickie (Douglas Reith) discovered he wasn’t terminally ill as he believed, and married Isobel (Penelope Wilton). Maid Anna (Joanne Froggatt) gave birth to a baby boy, to the delight of her husband Bates (Brendan Coyle). Thomas returned to the house to take over as butler from Carson (Jim Carter), who retired from butlering but continued to oversee the household.

It was babies, marriages and career progression all around, ending the series on a very positive note. The film will see the return of all these characters as the cast return to reprise their roles. Most importantly however, Maggie Smith will be back as Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, ready to drop a few of her signature scathing remarks.

Downton Abbey will be arriving in cinemas September 12.
