Armed with an array of Hawaiian shirts and a gaggle of accordions, Daniel Radcliffe has gone fully Weird in the first trailer for Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

Weird: The Weird Al Yankovic Story promises to follow Yankovic’s life “from his rise to fame in the music industry to his celebrity love affairs”. The trailer is soundtracked by Yankovic’s iconic 1985 Madonna parody ‘Like a Surgeon’.

The real Weird Al Yankovic is the writer and producer of the film. Yankovic co-wrote the film with director Eric Appel, who is well-known for his TV direction — his credits include New Girl, Selfie and Brooklyn 99. Weird will be his feature debut.

In an interview on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, Radcliffe said that Yankovic had him in mind for the role since Radcliffe went viral for singing ‘The Elements’ song back in 2010.

“I sang ‘The Elements’ next to Colin Farrell and a very bemused Rihanna, who I think was like, ‘Who is this kid and why is he singing all of the elements?'” Radcliffe recalled. “And I guess Al saw that and was like, ‘This guy maybe gets it.’ And so picked me.”

Evan Rachel Wood is also billed to play Madonna in the film. We don’t glimpse her in the trailer, but the ‘Like A Surgeon’ track is a great tease.

Need convincing that Daniel Radcliffe is perfect for the role? I invite you to watch this legendary clip from the latest season of Miracle Workers in which Radcliffe vogues to ‘She’ll Be Coming Around the Mountain’ in assless chaps.

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story will be out later this year. Watch the trailer below.
