This morning Nintendo announced the star-studded cast for the upcoming Super Mario Bros animated movie and, for reasons that make very little sense, Chris Pratt will play the titular character.

During today’s Nintendo Direct event, Shigeru Miyamoto — designer, producer, and game director at Nintendo — announced that the upcoming animated flick is set for release in December 2022 for the US.

While Miyamoto couldn’t reveal much in terms of the look and feel of the movie, he did let us know the A-listers who would be voicing the beloved characters in the Mario Universe on the big screen.

The Queen’s Gambit’s Anya Taylor-Joy will join as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. Fred Armisen, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Sebastian Maniscalco will each have smaller roles in the film as they play Cranky Kong, Kamek, and Spike, respectively.

To be honest, the cast was shaping up to be pretty damn impressive. That is, except for the fact that Chris Pratt, arguably Hollywood’s worst Chris, would be playing THE Mario.

Sadly, despite voice actor Charles Martinet voicing Mario, Wario, Luigi, Waluigi, Baby Luigi and Baby Mario in the games since 1995, he was pushed aside so that Chris Pratt could give us his terrible rendition of the Italian plumber. On the bright side, even though Pratt is stealing the Mario job, Martinet will still be included in the project as a “surprise cameo”.

Still, people online are very confused over the decision to cast Chris Pratt — especially when Italian-American Danny DeVito was RIGHT THERE to be paired with Charlie Day’s Luigi.

But, as always, the internet coped with their confusion and sadness the best way they know how: With copious amounts of memes.

So here are the best memes about the Super Mario Bros cast and the questionable decision to make Chris Pratt the new Mario:

Perhaps it is now our collective responsibility to give Super Mario Bros the Sonic the Hedgehog treatment. It’s the only way.
