Budjerah, one of Australia’s most vital rising talents, is having something of a golden age at the moment.

The tender, emotionally raw singer-songwriter won his first ARIA award last week, delivering a heartfelt speech that acknowledged his snaking path to success. It was a long-awaited anointing of a musician who never does anything but express himself; who, by the very nature of his art, compels those around him to think deeper, do better. ‘Missing You’, his debut single, simply sounds like the work of nobody else — it is an astonishingly accomplished work of art, one that announced the young musician as a major player in the industry.

Now, Budjerah has followed up that extraordinary ARIA win with a cover of ‘Sweet Disposition’ by Temper Trap, a haunting cover designed to pay tribute to the dearly departed Michael Gudinski.

Gudinski, one of those industry figures who needs no introduction, passed away in March of this year after a lifetime of supporting rising Australian acts. It was he who got Eskimo Joe and Evermore their start; who solidified the trajectory of The Skyhooks and Kylie Minogue. When he passed, he left behind a gaping void, one that Budjerah has now attempted to fill with his one of a kind voice, and his trembling sense of empathy.

The singer-songwriter didn’t do it alone, either. For the cover, he was joined by a crew of excellent Australian talents — Gretta Ray, whose indie-pop stylings cover a deep sense of shared humanity, and Ngaiire, whose rhythmic, avant-garde sound has made her a superstar, and rightly so.

Watch the whole tremendous work of art in full right here, and bask in the reflected glow of some of the most talented musicians in the country, paying tribute to a titan whose legacy will live on for years:
