The week before the election, Alec Baldwin made what I confidently assumed would be his last ever appearance as Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live, and boy do I feel silly now.

As it happens, Baldwin was absent from the show’s first episode of the Donald Trump era, with the producers opting for a sombre opening number that felt rather more appropriate under the circumstances.

But this week it was back to business as usual, with Baldwin reprising his role as a man whose outlandish campaign pledges are about to come back and bite him in the behind. Baldwin’s Trump spent most of the sketch coming to terms with the mess he’s made for himself, while hyperventilating and imagining “big beautiful boobs and buildings.”

He also got a visit from Vice President-elect Mike Pence, played by Beck Bennett. “Heard you went to see Hamilton, how was that?” asked Trump. “It was good,” his running mate replied. “I got a free lecture.”

“I love you Mike,” added Trump. “You’re the reason I’m never going to be impeached.”
