In other mistaken identity news, the internet also believes that Katy Perry may be JonBenét Ramsey, for some reason.

For several months there’s been persistent internet rumours that Republican Presidential candidate Ted Cruz is in fact the Zodiac Killer. If you’re not familiar, the Zodiac Killer was a serial murderer who claimed to have killed 37 people in California in the late 1960s and despite sending taunting cryptograph letters to the local press with coded messages, was never identified.

Even though various news organisations like NPR have dismissed that rumour with ‘facts’ like Ted Cruz was not even born when these murders took place, the truthers have stayed steadfast in their claims (the Facebook page Ted Cruz is the Zodiac Killer has over 7000 likes). Ted Cruz hasn’t denied that he is the Zodiac Killer, ergo he probably is the Zodiac Killer.

Now Public Policy Polling in the U.S have found that in a survey of over 1000 registered voters in Florida, almost 40 percent actually believe there’s a chance that the Presidential candidate is the notorious serial murderer (to be fair, some of them are “not sure”).

The rumour has gained so much traction that a group selling ‘Ted Cruz is the Zodiac Killer’ t-shirts to raise money for abortion and reproductive health services in Texas, has raised over $30,000. It is actually very funny that even outlets like The Washington Post feel compelled to address the accusation (they contend that “the evidence is flimsy at best”). The Zodiac Ted truthers will not be silenced.

He seems pretty open about it.

In other mistaken identity news, for some reason a man named Dave Johnson has made a video contending that pop singer/Taylor Swift enemy Katy Perry, is actually JonBenét Ramsey, the child pageant star whose 1996 murder remains unsolved. This strange and disturbing video was actually made last year, but for some reason it’s only making the rounds today, buoyed by people who love conspiracy theories based on literally nothing.

Keep on truckin’, internet freaks.
