There comes a time in every uni student’s life when we start to worry that maybe we’ve picked the wrong degree. And, honestly, who can blame us for having these doubts?

It’s easy to get confused when we’re constantly bombarded with amazing TV characters and their equally amazing careers. The adventures of our fave badass lawyers, fun-loving detectives, and goofy doctors seem so much more appealing than the boring careers we’re being prepped for at uni.

Sure, we’re not going to change degrees just because of our latest TV binge. But, then again, there’s no harm in dreaming of a different career path, right? Here are four TV shows that will have you seriously reconsidering your degree.

Suits

If you aren’t already obsessed with Suits, then buckle up because you’re about to be.

Suits follows the day-to-day escapades of working in one of New York’s top law firms. Each episode of the series oozes with drama, as the characters attempt to navigate hostile takeovers, in-office backstabbing, fierce negotiations, and lots of day-time drinking, all while delivering snappy dialogue in $3000 suits.

Overall, this high-powered legal drama is slick and suave and makes corporate law look totally glamorous. If you’re not a law student now, you’ll sure as hell want to be after watching it.

Younger

Younger revolves around 40-year-old single mother Liza Miller who’s forced to disguise herself as a millennial to re-enter the workforce and snag her dream publishing job. Hilarity and drama ensues.

There are many things to love about Younger. There’s the fashion, which makes negotiating book deals and combing through the slush pile look positively chic, and then there’s the unabashedly career-focused women of the show, who all love and support each other.

Most importantly, though, Younger proves you can have it all – the career, the wardrobe, the fabulous NYC lifestyle– even after completely reinventing yourself. In this show, which is all about getting a second chance at life, Liza’s story will have you thinking that maybe it’s never too late to switch degrees. You might even be tempted to follow in her footsteps and get an English Lit degree.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is one of the best workplace sitcoms out there. Set in the NYPD’s 99th precinct, we join a squad of zany detectives and watch as they solve crimes, catch criminals, and perform Halloween heists.

The series is hilarious, balancing crime-fighting action with goofy comedic relief. Yet Brooklyn Nine-Nine isn’t entirely flippant when it comes to the issues plaguing law enforcement. It still touches upon racial profiling, sexism, and homophobia with humour, heart and nuance.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a damn delightful show – one that may even leave you yearning for a degree in criminology and criminal justice. After all, who wouldn’t be tempted by the 99th precinct’s promise of witty banter, workplace tomfoolery, and a loveable bunch of co-workers who would ride-or-die for you?

Scrubs

An oldie, but a goodie. When Scrubs first appeared on our screens back in 2001, no one expected that it would become such a beloved TV classic. And yet, eight seasons later (minus that disastrous ninth season), Scrubs has managed to secure a place in all our hearts.

Watching JD’s journey from intern at Sacred Heart to resident would be enough to make anyone start questioning their degree.

You can’t watch Scrubs and not be charmed by its crazy dream sequences, random gags, and moments of pure, heart-warming friendship, as the characters work to save the lives of their patients. The show makes being a doctor look so good you’ll be willing to overlook the six years it takes to study medicine. And the long, gruelling hours of shift work. And the near constant presence of death.

OK, we admit it, these careers aren’t nearly glamorous as TV would have us believe. But that shouldn’t stop you from drifting off into your own daydreams during your next TV binge. Sometimes we just need a break from the reality of our degree. After all, there’s only so many mind-numbing lectures we can handle.
