The financial and critical success of Straight Outta Compton last year confirmed that not only should hip hop history be considered just as valuable and historically significant as other musical movements, but that people really, really want to see these stories represented on screen — Compton is still the highest earning music biopic in history.

For these reasons, the chance that Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez On Me will be popular, is pretty strong. Directed by Benny Boom who has worked with artists like Nas, Nicki Minaj and 50 Cent, the film tracks Tupac’s rise through the ranks of West Coast hip hop, to his eventual murder in a drive-by shooting in 1996. Judging by the trailer, the film will focus heavily on the existing problems of unfair targeting of African American men by law enforcement.

So yes: it’s a very troubling trailer!

All Eyez On Me doesn’t yet have a release date, so you still have time to emotionally prepare. Let’s hope it’s better than Notorious.
