And it is PERFECT.

Earlier this month, on a two-day visit to India, Tony Abbott addressed local business leaders over breakfast at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, and revealed it wasn’t his first time he had dined there there.

“Back in 1981, I spent three months as a backpacker roaming around India, this serious, fascinating, enthralling subcontinent, this world in one country,” he said. “I’d spent a lot of time in third-class compartments of railway carriages and I spent a lot of time in two-rupee-a-night hotels and I thought, ‘I’m going to have to treat myself’, so I came here to the Taj hotel.”

If you read that quote and immediately envisaged a Wes Anderson-like jaunt — an extremely privileged man, despairing for his lack of character, feigns poverty on a trip through the third world hoping to learn a little something about himself — you’re not the only one.
