Just when you think he’s out, he pulls himself back in. According to reports in The Sydney Morning Herald this morning, the former skipper of Team Australia, the honourable Tony Abbott MP, has told conservative allies in the UK that there’s a “good chance” that he’ll be running the show around here again before too long.

The paper quotes a “senior Liberal source close to Mr. Abbott,” who says that the ex-PM is looked at favourably within the party in light of Malcolm Turnbull’s lacklustre performance at the helm. At a rough estimate, I’d say that 50 per cent of that sentence makes sense.

Our former fearless leader is currently in the middle of an around-the-world tour, one that he has used to oh-so-subtly spruik his conservative credentials. He recently said that he was “quietly thrilled” about the Brexit result, despite having previously encouraged the UK to remain part of the EU.

When asked by the Herald whether he was keen to return to the leadership, Abbott reportedly refused to respond, opting instead to address the matter via that most diplomatic of political communication tools: the subtweet.

Of course if recent history has taught us anything, it’s that returning a former Prime Minister who you already ousted once is a surefire way to achieve victory at the next election. So yeah, personally, I’m all for this.
