After plaguing us with flared jeans, Von Dutch trucker caps and reality TV, the early-mid 2000s are rarely remembered fondly; but in the world of SNL they’re often regarded as one of the best eras. Maya Rudolph had started on Bronx Beat. Jimmy Fallon was still around ruining everything by laughing. And, most important, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were on the Weekend Update desk.

As they’re both some of the most objectively likeable people in the world, their segments became instant classics and, after manning (or emphatically womanning) the desk for two years from 2004, they’ve been regularly invited back for guest skits together. This has also led to three consecutive gigs co-hosting the Golden Globes and more recently, a feature film together due for release in early January.

Now their old stomping ground has finally done the sensible thing and asked them to co-host the show itself. Fey has done this on her own a few times, most recently in 2013. Poehler’s last stint was in 2010. But this year’s Christmas episode on December 19 will, inexplicably, be the first time they’ve had the honour to do it together.

As you bin the last few days on your advent calendar and start counting down to this instead, here are a few things to tide you over.
