Last week Sydney act Horrorshow tore up triple j’s Like a Version with their cover of The Whitlams’ 1997 classic ‘No Aphrodisiac’.

It’s a classic Australian tune from one of Sydney’s all-time greatest bands, and Horrorshow gave it the treatment it deserves — including a new verse performed by vocalist Solo.

Horrorshow and The Whitlams’ frontman Tim Freedman both hail from Sydney’s inner-west, but as Solo told triple j’s Ben and Liam, he hadn’t had the opportunity to meet him — until now.

After covering ‘No Aphrodisiac’ Solo decided to get together with Freedman, and asked a mutual friend to hook them up. They met up at Solo’s place in Newtown and had a nice, big chat about the state of live music in Australia, what it’s like being a muso in Sydney and, of course, ‘No Aphrodisiac’. Turns out that the first version of the song was written just 150m away from Solo’s lounge room, where the interview went down.

It might not seem like a hip-hop act like Horrorshow and an early-indie rock band like The Whitlams have much in common musically, but over the course of their chat Solo and Freedman talk about similar inspirations and themes for their tracks.

Freedman also gives his review of Horrorshow’s Like a Version (he’s a fan). You can watch the whole video, shot by Cole Bennetts and edited by Entropico, right here:
