Ah, the democracy sausage. It’s very clearly the best thing (perhaps the only good thing) about Australian politics: the promise of following up a trip to the ballot box with a greasy and delicious snag fresh off the barbie. It’s something about the way the bread cradles the sausage — comforting, affirming, and just plain delicious.

And while yes, the plebiscite postal vote postal survey isn’t a vote per se, there’s no reason not to apply the grand and tasty tradition here. That’s why Heaps Gay and the Equality Campaign are coming together for a second Equality Weekender, encouraging people to submit their postal survey forms and then kick back with an #equalitysausage and a bev or two.

The first Equality Weekender was aimed at getting people to enrol to vote, and was possibly a factor in a record surge in new and updated enrolments before the postal deadline. The new event is aimed at getting stragglers to join the 9.2 million Aussies who’ve already returned their survey forms. So just rock up, vote Yes, and enjoy a snag (although you don’t really need to vote Yes to get a snag. Democracy is for everyone).

Oh Yeah, And There’s Gonna Be A Concert

There’s gonna be events all around the country, and you can sign up to host your own here if you want to spread the love (and sausages). If you live in Sydney, though, don’t bother with the small stuff — there’s going to be a massive street party on Sunday featuring Ricki-Lee, John Paul Young and other live music acts. The event starts at 2pm on Taylor Square, just off Oxford St, nice and close to some of Sydney’s best gay bars if you’re keen to kick on afterwards.

Australian Marriage Equality Co-Chair Alex Greenwich is encouraging people to get to an Equality Weekender event, saying that “this party, and our campaign, is an invitation for all Australians to join together in shaping our nation as a place that truely celebrates our national values of fairness and equality.”

“This is a big thank you to our dedicated campaigners and volunteers, but it is also a reminder that we haven’t won this yet. Millions still need to return their postal surveys with a YES.”

If you’re yet to return your survey form, you’ve got until October 27 to mail it in if you want to be sure it’ll get counted. But really, why wait — do it now, and enjoy a well-deserved sausage on the weekend.
