The First Trailer For ‘Star Trek: Beyond’ Makes It Look Like ‘Fast & Furious’ For Nerds
Featuring Simon Pegg as Vin Diesel.
There are two very valid, non-mutually exclusive reasons why you may be disappointed by what’s contained in this article.
First of all, this is definitely not the space-themed franchise you want to talk about right now. I acknowledge that fact and Paramount Pictures likely knows it as well. They only released this trailer this morning because a German version of it leaked overnight. If you clicked on this post mistaking the words “Star Trek” for “Star Wars” please accept my deepest apologies and continue anxiously rocking back and forth until your midnight screening tomorrow night.
Secondly, this — the first trailer to Star Trek‘s third film in the rebooted franchise, Star Trek: Beyond — is fucking ridiculous. Purposively ditching the gloom and drudgery of 2013’s critically-divided Star Trek: Into Darkness, the film has taken on a whole new creative team. Most notably, Simon Pegg has come on board as a co-writer to bring some jokes into the mix and JJ Abrams has tagged out as director for Justin Lin (the man behind nearly all of the Fast & Furious movies).
On the one hand, this brings some desperately-needed lightheartedness into the rebooted franchise and comes close to a style akin to Guardians of the Galaxy. On the other hand, I despise it and now my entire day will play out to a tormented never-ending loop of Beastie Boy’s ‘Sabotage’.
Some very, very accurate commentary if you need:
