Some Melbourne Comedians Are Brilliantly Taking The Piss Out Of The ‘Reclaim Australia’ Idiots

In recent days, anti-Islam protest organisation/hysterical idiot support group Reclaim Australia have become big and vocal enough to join One Nation, Jacqui Lambie and Cory Bernardi in the pantheon of Great Australian Fuckwits. Congratulations, guys! Your trophy’s in the mail, and at the risk of spoiling the surprise it’s not so much a “trophy” as it is a “packing crate full of enraged wasps,” hope that’s okay.

Reclaim Australia have been around in some form or other since 2013, but they’ve been cropping up more often this year. Yesterday NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Nick Kaldas warned that “racist groups who have in the past worked under the radar [are] coming out, spreading hatred, particularly on the far-right”.

In completely unrelated events, Queensland Liberal MP and sweaty potato George Christensen announced on the same day that he would be speaking at a Reclaim Australia rally in Mackay. Christensen responded to suggestions that he maybe not use his authority as an Australian Parliamentarian to legitimise racism by declaring that “Hell will freeze over before I give in to such intimidation.” So brave. Truly, he is the William Wallace of our time.

The group is far more active online than in real life — mostly because it’s much easier to be a big tough racist from the safety of a fake Facebook profile with a Confederate flag profile picture — and one of their favourite activities is making lo-fi videos of some dero in front of a poorly-hung Australian flag explaining why halal food turns your organs Muslim or something. Which is where the True Australian Patriots come in. A few days ago a Facebook page declaring itself “against HALAL and other philosophys destroy AUSSIE WAY OF LIFE! Hands off our VEGEMITE!” went live. At first it was virtually indistinguishable from any number of fringe anti-Islam groups, right down to the questionable grammar and crappily made Southern Cross profile pictures. But then they posted their first video, and it became clear something wonderful had happened:

When they’re not railing against the “RUDD GOVERMENT” and how halal forces people to eat their Nanas, the True Australian Patriots raise awareness of upcoming anti-racism counter-protests which invariably attract far more people than the anti-Islam rallies they respond to. Junkee spoke to the people behind the page, a trio of comedians from Melbourne and Brisbane, who said they got the idea after watching videos by the similarly anti-Islamic United Patriots Front.

“They were so absurd and so stupid that we couldn’t stop laughing. So we thought it would be funny to create a parody version of that,” one of the comedians says. “We really wanted to make fun of these kinds of people and use satire to point out how ridiculous they look and how absurd their beliefs are. It’s a fun thing to do to make fun of neo-Nazis and other right-wing nutters, because they are just so idiotic. The jokes write themselves.”

Indeed they do, True Australian Patriot #1. Indeed they do.

The imitation is so spot-on it fools a lot of people they first time they come across the page; according to TAP #1, “a couple of the right wing sites shared our first video before quickly taking it down when they realised it was a parody,” and plenty of people “are sending us hate mail and think we are for real.” They even manage to nail the spectacularly-fucking-up-on-social-media angle Reclaim Australia briefly became famous for back in April.

As the page grows, hopefully more videos are on the way. The people need to know how to defend themselves from the threat of Budda and Sharia’s law in our schools. Onward, patriots.
