Sean Spicer Made A Bizarre Cameo In Stephen Colbert’s Emmys Monologue
Are we really ready to laugh about this yet?
The Emmys is one of my favourite awards ceremonies because some Who-ey celebrity you don’t know is always swanning the red carpet and you’re like “Why is this person at the Emmys?”
But one person I never, ever expected to show up at the 2017 Emmys is former White House Press Secretary/Resident Sad Sack of the Trump Administration, Sean Spicer. BUT HE DID. He did show up, and it was… weird.

Stephen Colbert, who hosted the Emmys for the first time this year, rolled Spicer out on the infamous mobile podium Melissa McCarthy used in her SNL impersonation of the former Trump administration spokesperson.
Colbert called on Spicer to help with a joke about the size of the Emmys audience, and Spicer responded “This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys, period, both in person and around the world,” referencing his infamous post-inauguration press conference.
As Spicer rolled back offstage, Colbert joked “Melissa McCarthy, everyone”, referencing McCarthy’sbrilliant recurring impression of Spicer on SNL this year. And McCarthy wasn’t the only audience member stunned by Spicer’s appearance on the Emmys stage.
It was certainly a surprising and amusing bit Colbert pulled, but some on Twitter have pointed out how uncomfortable they are by Spicer — who spent months lying and scheming on Trump’s behalf — becoming a genial celebrity.
What fun to watch @seanspicer having a sense of humor about all the times he lied to the American public! GOOD SPORT! #emmys

As Deray would say, watch whiteness work to normalize Sean Spicer! COME! ON!

SEAN SPICER DOES NOT GET TO BE FUNNY

.@TheEmmys that Sean Spicer thing was trash. Still thinking about it. Nothing else has happened in the telecast as far as I'm concerned SEND

The bit came moments after Colbert riffed on the notion that President Trump is now the biggest celebrity on television. “If he had won an Emmy,” he joked, “he wouldn’t have run for president. So this is all your fault.”
This is the first time Colbert has hosted the Emmys, and he made a point of calling out Trump, as well as HBO late-night presented Bill Maher, in his opening monologue.
Celebrities often use the Emmys as a platform to air political and social issues, so Colbert is likely the first in a long line of celebs to reference Trump in today’s ceremony. Time to play a little game called “Count The Trump References”…
