Today on Full Frontal, a frustrated Samantha Bee has bucked the American late night show tradition of delivering heartfelt, sombre monologues after national tragedies. In the wake of the mass shooting in Orlando, Bee explained that while the “the standard operating procedure” of talk show hosts was to provide a “well-meaning speech about how we will get through this together, how love wins” she was too furious to provide much comfort.

“Fuck it. I am too angry for that,” she said. “Love does not win, unless we love each other enough to fix our fucking problem… Hey, is it okay if instead of making jokes, I just scream for seven minutes?”

Bee may have been frustrated, but she wasn’t glib. Although this is a time of great sadness and reflection, too often these incidents are treated as horrible, inevitable accidents rather than something that could have been easily prevented. Bee lists the multiple transgressions that should have disqualified Omar Mateen from buying a gun but didn’t, points to Barack Obama’s vocal frustrations with the NRA only last week, and criticises politicians who advise prayer over practical measures of firearm control.

“Mass shootings have become so frequent in this country, that it seems like the only thing that’ll stop a bad guy with a gun is another bad guy with a gun, who coincidentally came to shoot up the same place,” she said.

Bee also mentioned that Australia has successfully stamped out mass shootings through stricter controls over the “portable mayhem” machines that are still sold freely in the U.S.
