It’s been 27 years since The Discovery Channel first broadcast Shark Week, a block of programming intended to raise awareness and respect for one of the most misunderstood beasts in the animal kingdom.

It didn’t take long for it to become a cult institution, with the week — seven days of shark-related content, dappled with associated promos and merch — now the longest running cable TV event in America, which was broadcast in more than 70 countries last year.

This year’s Shark Week kicks off on Sunday August 10, and Rob Lowe has nothing to do with it. That didn’t stop Discovery from enlisting the 50-year-old actor to star in the most powerful promo ever.

There he stands, proud and masculine, riding atop a pair of noble sharks with a blonde lasciviously clinging to his rippling calf. Circled by hammerheads and great whites as they leap up from the ocean, he flings handfuls of bloody meat nonchalantly in the air to land between their gnashing teeth.

Also, some seals are there.

The clip is a companion to the initial promo which aired last month:

…Rob Lowe does it better.
